Moby has announced the charities that will be receiving proceeds from his UK and European tour later this year.
The electronic artist will embark on his first European tour in a decade this September to celebrate 25 years of his acclaimed fifth studio album ‘Play‘, including a huge London show at The O2.
Acclaimed soul-jazz singer-songwriter Lady Blackbird – who he recently collaborated with on his 2024 LP ‘Always Centered At Night’ and 2023’s ‘Resound NYC’ – will be joining him as a special guest on tour, serving as the opening act.
Moby previously shared that he would be donating all his profits from the shows to animal rights charities. Now, he has announced the 12 local charities and two global organisations who will be the beneficiaries of the proceeds. Along with financial support, Moby has also offered spaces at the venues for the organisations to sell merchandise and distribute information about their causes.
The charities for France include L214, which focuses on the defense of animals used as food resources, revealing the conditions of breeding, transport, and slaughter of animals since 2008. Meanwhile, Assietes Végétales works to ensure that half of the menus in French collective restaurants are vegetarian, aiming to save the climate and farm animals.
In Belgium, the charities chosen are GAIA (Global Action in the Interest of Animals) which is one of the best-known animal rights organisations, ProVeg Belgium which focuses on reducing global consumption of animal products by 2040 and Vegan Brussels which aims to partner with gastronomers and culinary innovators on an exciting journey toward introducing and expanding vegan options in restaurants.
In Germany, the charity is Albert Schweizer which aims to raise animal welfare standards, reduce the consumption of animal products and spread the vegan idea.
In the UK, the charities are The Humane League UK which aims to end the abuse of animals raised for food, Plant-Based Universities which campaigns for universities to transition to 100 per cent plant-based catering to tackle climate and nature crises and The Animal Law Foundation which builds better laws for animals.
In Switzerland, the charities are Tier im Recht which works to improve the human-animal relationship in legal, ethical, and social contexts, the Swiss Animal Protection which is the the umbrella organization of 71 animal protection societies and operates throughout Switzerland and Tier im Fokus which fights for peaceful coexistence between humans and animals.
As for the global organisations, EarthPercent aims to create a healthy, equitable and liveable planet for generations to come and the Jane Goodall Institute aims to protect chimpanzees and inspires people to conserve the natural world, improving the lives of people, animals, and the environment.
Speaking to NME about his decision to donate all of the proceeds made from his tour, Moby said: “For years, my manager has been trying to get me to tour, throwing out ideas of having a payday or the glamour of being onstage, and I’d say I’m happy just playing acoustic Neil Young songs for fundraisers in my backyard. He realised the only thing I couldn’t say to no to was giving all the money away to animal rights organisations. The irony is the only way to get me on tour is to make sure I don’t make a penny from it!”
