Nicole Kidman has revealed that she almost quit acting for good in 2008 after the birth of her first child – find out more below.
In 2008, Kidman gave birth to her first child with Keith Urban, Sunday Rose Kidman-Urban. Later that year, she starred in Baz Luhrmann‘s epic romance drama Australia alongside Hugh Jackman. Now, Kidman has revealed that at one point, it was likely Australia could’ve been her final film role.
Speaking to CBS News to promote her new film Babygirl, Kidman revealed that after giving birth to Sunday Rose in July 2008, she was on the brink of retiring from acting before she was persuaded by her mother not to quit her career.
Kidman said, reflecting on wanting to focus on her family full-time: “When I gave birth to Sunday I was like, ‘Well, I think I’m pretty much done now’. We were living on a farm, and that’s when my mother said, ‘I wouldn’t give up completely. Keep a finger sort of in it.’ And I’m like, ‘No, no. I’m done now. I’m done.’ She’s going, ‘Just listen to me. Keep moving forward. Not saying that you have to do it to the level you’ve been doing it, but I wouldn’t give it up completely.’”
A couple of months later, Kidman would begin filming for roles such as Nine and Rabbit Hole. Since 2008, Kidman has starred in several acclaimed and blockbuster films including Stoker, The Railway Man, Paddington, Lion, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, The Beguiled, Aquaman and The Northman.
According to Kidman, her mother’s advice came from “a woman who was from a generation that didn’t have the opportunities that I had, that she had helped create for her daughters. So that’s probably something that she wished she’d had when she was little.”
As for TV roles, Kidman has starred in two acclaimed season of Big Little Lies, Nine Perfect Strangers, The Perfect Couple and more. The Perfect Couple premiered on Netflix in September and was a hit for the streaming platform.
Based on the 2018 novel of the same name by Elin Hilderbrand, it tells the story of a couple’s lavish wedding plans in Nantucket, Massachusetts that go awry when a member of the wedding party’s body washes up on the beach on the morning of the ceremony.
Nicole Kidman plays the family matriarch Greer Garrison Winbury, a famous novelist, and the cast also includes Liev Schreiber, Eve Hewson, Meghann Fahy, Jack Reynor and Dakota Fanning.
Kidman is next set to star in the A24 erotic thriller Babygirl, which is due to release in cinemas in the UK in January 2025.
