Noel Gallagher has admitted that he is still trying to “live up” to the success of Oasis‘ first two albums.
In a new interview with The Sunday Times‘ Culture magazine, Gallagher spoke about how doesn’t believe either himself or Liam Gallagher‘s solo material have matched the band’s 1994 debut ‘Definitely Maybe’ and 1995 follow-up ‘(What’s The Story) Morning Glory?.
“We went directly from the last night of the ‘Definitely Maybe’ tour to record ‘(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?’, and then spent the following 29 years – and counting – trying to live up to both albums,” he said.
He went on to explain that if they had only made their debut album, the former Oasis chief would have been as happy as he is now.
Gallagher added: “I guess it’s the definitive Oasis album. It has the spirit, the arrogance of youth. Teenage anthems. It’s live – no bullshit. If we’d made only that album, then I’d still be as happy as I am now.”
He went on: “We knew the songs were great because we played them every night and all the shows were outrageous. But at that time it was just a good album – nothing more, nothing less. It’s only through time that it has become what it is now.”
Gallagher admitted that it is a “mystery” how they made such a great record because they had no idea what they were doing in the studio.
He said: “We were trying to ‘make a record’, but none of us had ever done one before. So, we just set the gear up and got into character and pressed record. The rest, as they say, is mystery.”

Coming in various formats, it will contain recordings from the abandoned original session at Monnow Valley Studios, as well as outtakes from the definitive album recording session at Sawmills Studios in Cornwall.
Meanwhile, Noel recently responded to a fan in the crowd at Y Not Festival who had asked about the possibility of an Oasis reunion. “When are we going to see you? In 2025 or 2026? The answer is neither,” he told the fan, earning jokey boos from the crowd. “I’ll take the fact that you’re booing as a fucking compliment!” he added.
That followed on from Gallagher’s nephew and Liam’s son Gene Gallagher claiming in an interview that Liam wants the reunion to come to fruition.
Rumours about an Oasis reunion came to a head earlier this summer, when Liam embarked on his ‘Definitely Maybe’ anniversary shows, and speculation emerged that his brother would join him on stage.
Before the tour kicked off, Liam shared that Noel turned down an opportunity to reunite for the shows, and even suggested that he would “send him a box of chocolates” as an apology for being “really mean” to him around the time of Oasis’ break-up in 2009.
Elsewhere, Gallagher recently said that he thinks he will be “fucking lucky to make it to 60” after discussing the current state of his health.
It comes just weeks after he shared his frustration after revealing he will have to have an operation on his “bad knee”.
