Snoop Dogg and Steven Knight

Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has explained how Snoop Dogg made him realise how successful the show was.

The rapper is among the many celebrity fans of the Birmingham-set gangster drama, which ran for six series between 2013 and 2022.

Speaking on Desert Island Discs, Knight recalled meeting with Snoop, as the music star revealed how Peaky Blinders “reminded him of how he got involved in gang culture”.

“He told me the story of his life, and it was all about family keeping you in, and escaping from family to do the bad stuff, and then the family relocating their emotions and loyalties to follow you, and then escaping again,” Knight explained.

“He was such a great bloke, he was so nice to talk to, but it just made me understand that there is something in Peaky that one has come across that is pretty universal.”

Snoop has previously expressed his love of the BBC show, covering the show’s theme ‘Red Right Hand’ back in 2019.

Peaky Blinders is currently gearing up for a Netflix film spin-off, which will see Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy return to the lead role of gangster Tommy Shelby, while Dune star Rebecca Ferguson will also appear.

The film, which will be directed by Tom Harper, is set to take place during World War II and was officially confirmed in June.

“Tommy Shelby returns. A Peaky Blinders Film starring Cillian Murphy is coming to Netflix,” Netflix announced at the time.

Murphy added: “It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me… It is very gratifying to be recollaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This one is for the fans.”

Knight said he was “genuinely thrilled that this movie is about to happen”, teasing: “It will be an explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. No holds barred. Full-on Peaky Blinders at war.”

Peaky Blinders also looks set to continue on the small screen after it was reported last year that Netflix was developing two spin-off series – one set in Boston in the mid-20th century, and another focusing on Polly Gray.

In other news, Snoop performed during the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympics over the weekend, playing hits ‘Drop It Like It’s Hot’ and ‘The Next Episode’ as the Olympic torch was handed over to Los Angeles for the 2028 games.
