Last October, Red Hot Chili Peppers were, according to drummer Chad Smith, âalmost doneâ recording their next album. It will be the first to feature guitarist Frusciante since 2006âs âStadium Arcadiumâ.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Smith said the band is âgetting along greatâ, and that they are âreally listening to each other in a new wayâ.
After a ten-year absence from the group, Frusciante re-joined in 2019, replacing Josh Klinghoffer. âJohnâs been back for a while now,â Smith said, âso it feels completely natural. Heâs so into it. Heâs working so hard. Weâre all working hard, but heâs in there with all the overdubs and the magic that he brings.â
Frusciante appeared on the bandâs studio albums âMotherâs Milkâ, âBlood Sugar Sex Magikâ, âCalifornicationâ, âBy the Wayâ and âStadium Arcadiumâ, all released between 1989 and 2006.
Smith said the group arenât focusing on trying to live up to the success of any of those albums. âAll of our records are just real good snapshots of where weâre at [at] that time,â he said. âYou canât really go, âOh, gee, I hope itâs as good asâŠâ Then youâre starting to have preconceived notions about what you want to write.
âLook, John hasnât been in our group in ten years. Thatâs a long time. So of course itâs going to sound different, but itâs gonna sound like the four of us because we do have this special chemistry together. It sounds like Red Hot Chili Peppers, but itâs different and new, and to me thatâs great⊠We really like it and weâre proud of it and it has to start there.â
Though he didnât reveal a release date for the bandâs 12th studio album, Smith said that the as-yet-unnamed release would drop before the Peppers undertake their massive global stadium tour in mid-2022.
Announcing the mammoth undertaking last week, the Peppers will be supported by The Strokes, HAIM, St. Vincent and more.
