Ryan Reynolds and Rob Delaney

Ryan Reynolds has revealed that he made sure a tribute to co-star Rob Delaney’s late son was included in the credits of Deadpool & Wolverine.

Delaney plays Deadpool’s friend and X-Force team member Pete Wisdom in the hit box office film, as he did in the previous instalment Deadpool 2, and now Reynolds has opened up about the emotionally poignant message that is included in the film’s closing credits.

Writing on Instagram, Reynolds said: “There’s more to Rob Delaney than some realize. He’s one of the most subversively funny people I know. He’s a beautiful, acerbic and vulnerable writer. If you stayed through the credits of Deadpool & Wolverine, you might notice a credit saying, ‘For Henry Delaney.’ Henry was Rob’s son. And Rob lost his little boy to a brain tumor in 2018. Right as we finished Deadpool 2.”

“I’ve always kicked my own ass because I didn’t place a tribute to Henry over the end credits of [Deadpool 2],” Reynolds continued. “If there’s a bright side, even more people are seeing Henry’s name in the credits of Deadpool & Wolverine. And at long last, father and son are sharing the same screen.”

Delaney announced the passing of his two-year-old son Henry in February 2018. “Henry was a joy,” he wrote. “He was smart, funny, and mischievous and we had so many wonderful adventures together, particularly after he’d moved home following fifteen months living in hospitals.”

“His tumor and surgery left him with significant physical disabilities, but he quickly learned sign language and developed his own method of getting from A to B shuffling on his beautiful little bum. His drive to live and to love and to connect was profound.”

“The NHS nurses and doctors and the home carers and charity workers who helped our family survive Henry’s illness will be my heroes until the day I die. I am desperately sad right now, but I can say with authority that there is good in this world.”

In a three-star review of Deadpool & WolverineNME wrote: “Despite the A-list distractions (no spoilers here), Deadpool & Wolverine is really all about Reynolds and Jackman. In fact, it’s really all about Reynolds – with Jackman doing a heroic job of playing the surly straight man trying to keep up with Reynolds’ sweary killer clown. The first two Deadpool films were funny and violent and original, but this one shows Marvel’s most gloriously inappropriate superhero at his very best and worst.”

The film has been a huge success in cinemas, with Reynolds and Blake Lively recently becoming the first married couple to top the US box office since Bruce Willis and Demi Moore.

With Deadpool & Wolverine in the top spot, and Lively’s It Ends With Us in second, it marks the first time the feat has been achieved since Die Hard 2 and Ghost took up the top two spots in 1990.
