Ryan Reynolds has opened up on why he had to cut Rob McElhenney’s cameo from Deadpool & Wolverine – find out more below.
Shortly after the release of Deadpool & Wolverine, Rob McElhenney – who co-owns Welsh football team Wrexham AFC with Reynolds – revealed that he had filmed a cameo for the Marvel superhero film, but that it was cut for unknown reasons.
Now, nearly a month later, Reynolds has revealed why McElhenney’s scene was ultimately scrapped. Reynolds wrote on Instagram over the weekend: “A word on my “darling” friend, @robmcelhenney. Rob very kindly did a cameo in #DeadpoolAndWolverine which will hopefully live on in the digital extras.”
“While editing a movie, they say you “sometimes have to kill your darlings.” And with a heavy heart (and through great outside intervention) I had to kill a darling with this cameo…”
He went on to explain: “The sequence wasn’t working the way we’d originally constructed it. Rob was the only reason it stayed in the cut for as long as it did, because even under a TVA mask and helmet, you can feel him smouldering with a raw and almost infinite reservoir of talent, writerly wit and “I create hit tv shows” swagger. Don’t even get me started on Wrexham. I wouldn’t know a love like @wrexham_afc if it weren’t for Rob McElhenney.”
Reynolds then spoke at length about the type of friend McElhenney is, saying Rob flew all the way to London for the cameo, and that he’s “mortified” that he had to cut the scene entirely.
In a three-star review of Deadpool & Wolverine, NME wrote: “Despite the A-list distractions (no spoilers here), Deadpool & Wolverine is really all about Reynolds and Jackman. In fact, it’s really all about Reynolds – with Jackman doing a heroic job of playing the surly straight man trying to keep up with Reynolds’ sweary killer clown. The first two Deadpool films were funny and violent and original, but this one shows Marvel’s most gloriously inappropriate superhero at his very best and worst.”
The film has been a huge success in cinemas, with Reynolds and Blake Lively recently becoming the first married couple to top the US box office since Bruce Willis and Demi Moore.
With Deadpool & Wolverine in the top spot, and Lively’s It Ends With Us in second, it marks the first time the feat has been achieved since Die Hard 2 and Ghost took up the top two spots in 1990.
