The band released ‘Act 1’ of the album this month and recently finished aĀ North American arena tour with Janeās Addiction, which had its Portland leg cancelled after frontman Billy Corgan came down with laryngitis.

Following on from 2020āsĀ āCYRā, Smashing Pumpkins’ forthcoming 33-song ārock operaā album ‘ATUM’ serves as a sequel to the bandās classic double records āMellon Collie And The Infinite Sadnessā (1995) and āMachina/The Machines Of Godā (2000).
Speaking toĀ NMEĀ recently, Corgan said: āWhen you decide to do a three-act, 33-song rock musical in 2022ā¦ youāre definitely stepping in it! Because thereās a lot of people who believe less is more these days. Iām on the opposite side ā I actually think more is more!ā
āWith 33 songs, I was sort of Switzerland on the whole thing,ā he toldĀ NME. āI really didnāt get too caught up in what everybody would want. And what was nice was that everybody seemed to want the same track. So if that represents the record for them, then great. But thereās so much music.ā
