Paloma Faith

The first album I bought

Michael Jackson ā€“ ā€˜Badā€™

ā€œI saved up some birthday money ā€“ back in the day when you used to get three pound coins sellotaped to the inside of a card ā€“ and I walked up to Woolworths with my mum. It was all cassette tapes and I bought [‘Bad’]. I refused to take [the tape] out of my pocket at primary school, even though it wasnā€™t playing.”

The song that reminds me of home

Tracy Chapman ā€“ ā€˜She’s Got Her Ticketā€™

ā€œWhen I think of home, I think of London in the era that I grew up in, not necessarily my house. I listened to the first Tracy Chapman album [ā€˜Tracy Chapmanā€™] on road trips with my mum and step-dad when I was a kid. I remember lying in the back of the car listening to it. That song made me think that I could create an escape or write my own destiny.ā€

The song I wish Iā€™d written

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds ā€“ ā€˜Into My Armsā€™

ā€œIt feels like the most pure and true way of expressing love that Iā€™ve heard. I think itā€™s harder to write a song on a subject so many people have written about without it sounding like a clichĆ©, and there are no clichĆ©s in those lyrics. Heā€™s found another way to say it in a way I really relate to. Itā€™s one of those songs that was staring you in the face, but you didnā€™t write it because you were complicating everything.ā€

The song I canā€™t get out of my head

Ā Tyler, The Creator ā€“ ‘You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch’

ā€œMy daughterā€™s three and she loves the cartoon. Every time we get in the car we have to play that song and she knows all the words. I think Tyler, The Creator is a genius, I love him. I presented him with his Brit award at the last ceremony on one knee.ā€

The song that makes me want to dance

Teardrops ā€“ ā€˜Lovestationā€™

ā€œIt brings back memories of when I was about 16 and going to clubs. I had a fake ID and I used to go to UK garage days. It used to be Ā£10 to get in ā€“ or Ā£3 if you went in before 11, so Iā€™d go in before 11. And then Iā€™d not spend any money. Iā€™d ask for tap water at the bar and Iā€™d just dance.ā€

The song I want played at my funeral

Bill Medley, Jennifer Warnes ā€“ ā€˜(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Lifeā€™

ā€œI want people to laugh at my funeral. I donā€™t want any sombre songs, and I want people to dress up and have a laugh at my expense. I was actually asked what Iā€™d want on my gravestone recently by Suzi Quatro, and I said: ā€˜Finally, a fucking breakā€™.ā€

The song that changed my life

Etta James – ‘At Last’

ā€œThe first time that I heard a voice that really spoke to me was when I heard Etta James. I was in a rockabilly band when I was younger called Paloma and the Penetrators, and I was singing quite a lot of Little Richard and Wanda Jackson, but then one of the guys in the band said: ā€˜You should listen to Etta James, as tonally thereā€™s something about the way you sing that reminds me of herā€™. So I started to listen to it, and all the songs were so amazing and suited my voice. Then I started to earn more money than Iā€™d ever earned at that time just from doing [‘At Last’] at weddings. Iā€™ve got a lot to thank that song for, because I was short of money quite often. Iā€™d get a booking at the last minute and Iā€™d be able to make my rent. So it changed my life, as it kept me housed.ā€
