The team behind the 2024 Emmys have revealed why a bigger tribute to the late Matthew Perry was cancelled.

This year’s ceremony featured a short tribute to the actor during the event’s “In Memoriam” section, which was backed by the iconic Friends theme tune.

However, the team behind the this year’s awards show have revealed that there were initially plans for an even bigger tribute, which would have featured the sitcom’s cast.

“We had talked about it early on,” executive producer Jesse Collins told The Hollywood Reporter. “But I can imagine, from their side, they’re mourning someone who was still very close to them.

“I can’t speak for them, but we all have to respect that they were their own family. It was probably just a little too soon.”

Fellow executive producer Jeannae Rouzan-Clay further added that Perry’s death is “still very fresh” for his former colleagues.

Perry passed away at the age of 54 in October last year, having been found unresponsive in a hot tub at his Los Angeles home. A post-mortem examination concluded the actor died from the “acute effects of ketamine”.

Other contributing factors listed were drowning, coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine, used to treat opioid use disorder.

Perry was best known for playing Chandler Bing in Friends. His other credits include The West WingAlly McBeal and Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip.

Throughout his life, Perry was open about his struggles with drugs and alcohol, which he documented in his 2022 memoir Friends, Lovers, And The Big Terrible Thing.

Following his death, his Friends co-stars Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer and Lisa Kudrow all paid tribute in a joint statement.

“We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew,” they wrote. “We were more than just castmates. We are a family. There is so much to say, but right now we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss.

“In time we will say more, as and when we are able. For now, our thoughts and our love are with Matty’s family, his friends, and everyone who loved him around the world.”

In other news, it was recently reported that the cast of Friends are planning a special reunion to honour Perry.

Some Star Wars fans have taken to social media to share their shock and disappointment that actor Ray Stevenson was not included in the 2024 In Memoriam tribute at the 75th Emmy Awards.

The awards, which took place last night (January 15) featured its well-known segment where a tribute is paid to those in the industry who died in the last year. The video montage was accompanied by singer Charlie Puth and duo, The War And Treaty, performing a combination of 2015 hit, ‘See You Again’ and the Friends theme song, ‘I’ll Be There For You’ by The Rembrandts, paying homage to Matthew Perry, who died last October.

The list of names included Euphoria actor, Angus Cloud, screenwriter and producer, Norman Lear, and musical theatre star, Angela Lansbury, among many others. However, fans of the Star Wars movie franchise were confused as to why Stevenson wasn’t mentioned in the tribute.

Stevenson, who played Baylan Skoll in the Star Wars spin-off TV series, Ahsoka, as well as voicing Gar Saxon in Star Wars Rebels and Star Wars: The Clone Wars, died on 21 May 2023 aged 58. No cause of death has been revealed.

Fans have taken to X/Twitter to share their confusion and disappointment, with one user posting: @TelevisionAcad I’m judging you for not adding Ray Stevenson to your in memoriam !!!!!!!!”

Another user made a similar post which read: “Shame on you, TV Academy! #RayStevenson #RyanONeil #Emmys”, the second hashtag referring to the late actor, Ryan O’Neal, who was also not included in the tribute.

One user questioned the process of being included in the segment, writing: “I think I have asked this before, but do family/friends have to request for you to be in the “in memoriam”… did I miss it or did they not include Ray Stevenson…”

Also left out of the tribute were chat show host Jerry Springer, British actor, Julian Sands and Legally Blonde actor, Racquel Welch.

The Emmy awards were largely dominated by The Bear and Succession, with the latter scoring 26 nominations.

Matthew Perry threw table at ex-fiancée Molly Hurwitz, report claims

Sources also claim he assaulted his live-in sober companion and lied about his sobriety

Matthew Perry physically assaulted at least two women and lied about his sobriety in the lead-up to his death, according to reports.

The Friends star passed away at the age of 54 in October last year, having been found unresponsive in a hot tub at his Los Angeles home. A post-mortem examination concluded the actor died from the “acute effects of ketamine”.

Following his death, multiple allegations have been made against Perry. One of them alleges that he “threw a coffee table” at his ex-fiancée Molly Hurwitz after she accused him of cheating in 2021.

“He threw a coffee table at her and told her that she was crazy,” a source told the Daily Mail. “He hated that she dumped him and he had terrible abandonment issues.”

According to US Weekly, three sources close to actor also claimed that he shoved his live-in sober companion Morgan Moses into a wall and “threw her onto a bed” in March 2022 during a confrontation about his drug abuse.

Perry was said to be “mortified” by the incident and attempted to smooth things over with Moses.

“He was panicking because the person who was always by his side had left him,” the source said, adding that the pair were no longer friends. “This time, he took threats and hints of violence into actual violence,” they added.

Hurwitz and Moses have not yet commented on the allegations against Perry.

In his memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing, Perry claimed he was finally sober. However, the sources claim he had been lying about his sobriety while promoting his book in 2022.

“Since [Friends ended], he was set financially and didn’t have to work, so it created an environment to use,” they said.

“He was verbally, emotionally and physically abusive,” the source added. “All he knew how to do was cause pain and play the victim.”

Another source said Perry “wasn’t a horrible human being. [But] he was so warped in his addiction that he wasn’t himself and the man he should be”.

‘Friends’ scripts rescued from studio bin to be placed on auction

They’re expected to sell for between £600 and £800

Original Friends scripts that were rescued from a studio bin are to be head to auction.

The season four finale drafts were recovered in 1998 by a staff member at the Fountain Studios in Wembley, where the two UK-set episodes were filmed.

The scripts – which are expected to sell for between £600 and £800 – were used for the two-part season finale entitled ‘The One With Ross’s Wedding’, in which Ross famously said Rachel’s name at the alter instead of Emily’s.

Amanda Butler, of Hanson Ross auctioneers in Royston, Hertfordshire, said the scripts should have been destroyed “so the ending wouldn’t be leaked”.

The unnamed seller worked at Fountain Studios until 1999, but kept hold of the scripts in a bedside drawer until recently unearthing them.

“I remember wondering which member of the cast they might have belonged to,” they said (via BBC News). “When I came to clear my desk I just swept everything into a big cardboard box. I forgot the scripts were there.

“They ended up in a bedside drawer and they’ve been there ever since. I could have quite easily have thrown them out. These scripts deserve to be owned by a big Friends fan.”

The scripts will be auctioned off on January 12 alongside a production hoodie and a Friends DVD box set.

Butler said it was unclear who the scripts belonged to before being discarded, but added: “There is a sticker for a chap called John Lanzer who is a set designer so they possibly could have been his.

Butler went on to admit that she’s a huge fan of Friends. “It’s just surreal to read it and see in writing what you’ve seen on the screen”.

Warning that dedicated fans could push the item way beyond its expected auction price, she added: “The sky’s the limit, if people want them they will bid for them,” she said.

Courtney Cox’s horror-comedy axed after two seasons

The show will be removed from streaming by the end of the year

Courtney Cox’s horror-comedy series, Shining Vale, will be removed from its streaming service soon.

The show stars the Friends actor as a novelist who moves her family into a haunted house. It was created by Sharon Horgan and Jeff Astrof, and also starred Greg Kinnear and Mira Sorvino. It ran for two seasons, debuting in March 2022.

According to Deadline, series producer Warner Bros. TV tried selling the series elsewhere, but were unsuccessful.

However, according to Variety, Astrof has already started writing a third season, with hopes that it may reach screens via another service at some point.

With the finale of season two only airing on Starz on December 1, the entire two seasons will be removed at the end of this year, and the show cut from the network.

Astrof shared a post on his Instagram page earlier this week with the caption: “What an absolute joy I had working on this show. Not a single bad day. Please watch the STARZ (turns out limited) series Shining Vale by 12/31.”

According to Variety, he also gave an exclusive statement saying: “Given all the real heart-breaking news going on in the world right now, it would be inappropriate for me to say I’m heartbroken about Starz not picking up Shining Vale for a season three.”

He continued: “However, I have no problem saying I am crushed and deeply saddened by the news. For the actors, it has been a year since we wrapped, but I have been working on writing season three up until I heard the news last week.”

It is unconfirmed why exactly the series was cut, however insider sources reportedly told Variety that Shining Vale “did not find a large enough audience to continue.”

Last month, Cox shared a touching tribute to the late actor, Matthew Perry, her co-star on Friends, who died in late October.

Sam Esmail has revealed why ‘Friends’ was crucial to include in ‘Leave The World Behind’

‘There’s no show that fits that moment more perfectly than that show’

Sam Esmail has shared why Friends was the perfect escape mechanism in his new Netflix movie, Leave The World Behind.

The disaster movie, which stars Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke and Mahershala Ali, features a character called Rose, who is clearly attached to the beloved 1990s sitcom.

When a widespread internet outage occurs and Rose can’t watch the series finale, which was originally watched by 52.million American viewers, she is left without her, and many others’ comfort show.

In a recent interview with Collider, Esmail shared how he was set on Friends being Rose’s obsession, and an occurring theme throughout the movie.

“There was a big conversation that we had for a long time, and you could run through all the sitcoms that are these classics that could potentially work but none of them really had that theme song that was so iconic,” he explained.

He continued: “And, I have to stress this, the lyrics of that song were so perfect for how the film ends. I honestly don’t know what I would have done.”

‘I’ll Be There For You’ by The Remembrandts became an iconic theme tune as the series has gained and retained success, with viewership increasing in months following the death of main cast member, Matthew Perry.

Esmail revealed about the decision: There was a point where, after we ran through other options, I think I looked at the team and I said, ‘I don’t think we can afford to lose Friends.’”

He added: “There’s no show that fits that moment more perfectly than that show, so we had to use all our powers to make sure that we got the rights, and we luckily did.”

Zac Efron has opened up about his relationship with the late Matthew Perry, admitting he has one regret following the Friends star’s recent passing.

The two actors starred together in the 2009 comedy film 17 Again about a struggling father, Mike O’Donnell (Perry), who suddenly transforms into his teenage self (portrayed by Efron).

In a new interview with Variety, the High School Musical star reflected on the time he spent with Perry years ago, and how the Chandler Bing actor became an important figure in his life.

“I hold the time we shared together really dear. I’ve been thinking about him a lot, every day,” Efron said. “He was in a unique position for me in my career, and in my life. His passing is affecting me a lot.

“It definitely can be isolating,” he added, addressing the loneliness of “being an actor and being in the spotlight”.

Efron then shared his one regret following Perry’s passing. “It’s very important to reach out to friends and foster relationships where you can talk and share stories,” he said. “I wish in the past couple of years that I had an opportunity to do that with Matthew.”

Perry was found dead at his Los Angeles home on October 28, aged 54. His cause of death has been “deferred” after an initial postmortem showed no signs of meth or fentanyl in his system.

Following his passing, fellow Friends cast members Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Lisa Kudrow, and Matt LeBlanc penned a tribute to the actor.

In a statement to People, the cast said: “We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just cast mates. We are a family.

“There is so much to say, but right now we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss. In time we will say more, as and when we are able,” the statement continued.

“For now, our thoughts and our love are with Matty’s family, his friends, and everyone who loved him around the world.” The statement was then signed by all five cast members.

Jennifer Aniston has opened up about her final conversation with her late Friends co-star, Matthew Perry.

Speaking to Variety for her first interview since Perry’s untimely death in late October, Aniston recalled to the outlet that she had been texting with him in the morning of the day that he died.

While she did not share details on what the pair talked about, Aniston said of her former co-star’s behaviour that morning: “He was happy. He was healthy. He had quit smoking. He was getting in shape. He was happy — that’s all I know. I was literally texting with him that morning, funny Matty. He was not in pain. He wasn’t struggling. He was happy.”

Aniston continued: “I want people to know he was really healthy, and getting healthy. He was on a pursuit. He worked so hard. He really was dealt a tough one. I miss him dearly. We all do. Boy, he made us laugh really hard.”
