U2 perform at the Las Vegas Sphere during their residency

U2 have announced a new concert movie that was filmed during their residency at the Sphere Las Vegas – find out more below.

Titled V-U2, the concert film was directed by the band’s guitarist The Edge and Morleigh Steinberg over the course of their historic residency at the Sphere Las Vegas. The film is being described as an “immersive concert film” that was “created specifically for Sphere, and will utilize the venue’s technologies to create an experience that is only possible at this next-generation entertainment medium.”

“The goal was to give the immersive moviegoers as close to the live U2:UV concert experience as possible — and then some,” The Edge said in a statement. “I’ve never seen a U2 show. I’m so relieved I caught a great one.”

The band have also released a trailer for V-U2, which includes a clip of The Edge telling viewers: “After all these years, I get to see a U2 show.” Watch the trailer below.

V-U2 will be screened exclusively at the Sphere Las Vegas from September 5 onwards. U2 Fan Club members can access pre-sale tickets from today (August 22) at 10am PT until Friday (August 23) 9am PT. General tickets will go on sale on August 23 at 10am PT. Get your tickets via Ticketmaster, starting at US$100.

V-U2 also marks the the first-ever film to be shot using Big Sky, a high-resolution camera system developed by Sphere Entertainment.

NME visited U2’s first Sphere Las Vegas show, and in a five-star review said that it “truly takes your breath away”: “They pull off a dazzling series of technological tricks right from the outset as whirring drones whizz past the audience while everything from giant helicopters, falling letters, widescreen desert landscapes and even a projection of the Sphere itself come hurtling towards the audience.”

U2 are said to be working on a new album, and in a November interview, Bono said that the record was “somewhat tied” to the medical status of drummer Larry Mullen Jr., who has been recovering from neck surgery, and pulled out of playing at the band’s Las Vegas Sphere residency.
