Victoria Canal has responded, after tabloids claimed that she was the new romantic interest of Hollywood icon Tom Cruise.
The singer, songwriter and pianist found herself at the centre of rumours recently, after she was seen with the Top Gun star at the 2024 edition of Glastonbury Festival.
She was also photographed with the actor as the two of them met Bruce Springsteen at a recent show – adding fuel to the fire and leading to various outlets reporting that the two had begun dating.
Now, Canal has taken to social media to shut down the speculation, and clarify that she is not in a relationship with the Mission: Impossible star.
“Guys, this is literally bonkers, but apparently the tabloids think I am dating Tom Cruise. I’m deceased,” she wrote in the caption, sharing a selfie, an image of them together and various tabloid headlines. “Let’s just stop this in its tracks – I’m sorry to bum u out but I am not dating the man, albeit a lovely person & artist. lol never thought I would have to clarify that out loud in my life. Y’all.”
She continued, joking that while she was unhappy with one of the photos chosen for the article, she was pleased to be referred to by her name. “If you’re gonna write me up @pagesix use a better picture damn. (huge perk: first time I’m Spanish-American singer Victoria Canal and not one-armed pianist whose name remains unmentioned!!!! there’s always a win somewhere, thanks Tom).
Ending the caption she wrote: “In all seriousness guys, Tom has been nothing but a respectful and encouraging person and mentor, much like Chris Martin, my dad, my music teachers and other wise people that have learned a lot from living. And again, I am friends with all kinds of people who are very different to me. you learn a lot if you’re open to life bringing you those teachers.
“Ok lastly gonna take this opportunity to say I’M GOING ON TOUR and have 2 new slaying songs out so if you’re new here, enjoy xx”
The reference to Chris Martin comes as a nod to the support that the singer has offered Canal in recent times. Most recently, the frontman brought Canal on stage during Coldplay’s record-breaking fifth headlining performance at Glastonbury.
Joining the band for their rendition of ‘Paradise’, the moment came after Canal told NME how the two first got in touch.
According to Canal, she once posted an April Fool’s Day Rolling Stone magazine cover she had made in college, which displayed the text “Victoria Canal wows Chris Martin”. The spoof picture was spotted by a connection of Martin’s, and Canal did indeed ‘wow’ the Coldplay frontman when he heard her music, eventually helping her to get signed to Parlophone.
Last year, Canal also spoke to NME for Radar’s Breakout series, and opened up about what it was like to hear Martin describe ‘Swan Song’ as one of the “best songs ever written”.
“There’s a very specific feeling that comes with your idol recognising you as anything worthy of attention. I’m still pretty bewildered by the fact that he knows I exist, let alone that he will send me encouraging texts when I’m about to do a show being like, ‘You have everything you need inside of you, focus on the fans, they love you, you love them, prioritise that connection’,” she said.
“He’s just always about connection and gratitude, and being in the present, and he has such a love for music. I don’t think I know anyone else that has a more vast knowledge of music, and a greater interest in it after all these years.”
