Beck treated fans at Newport Folk Festival to a surprise performance, which included a cover of Bob Dylan‘s ‘Maggie’s Farm’. Check out the footage, and his full setlist, below.

The unexpected set took place on Friday (July 26), with Beck enlisting a full band to deliver a short set of covers and originals. In a homage to the festival’s origins as a celebration of folk, Beck performed versions of some of the genre’s most iconic songs, such as Fred Neil’s ‘The Other Side of This Life’, Jimmy Rodgers’ ‘Waiting for a Train’ and ‘God Moves on the Water’ by Blind Willie Johnson cover.

He also played a handful of his own tracks, including ‘John Hardy’, ‘Stagger Lee’, and ‘Loser’.

Earlier this month, Beck teamed up with Orville Peck for their new collaboration, ‘Death Valley High’. Featuring a bright horn section and groovy bass and guitar lines, the song is the latest to be shared from Peck’s forthcoming album ‘Stampede’ which is set for release on August 2 via Warner.

Beck is currently midway through his orchestral tour, check out what he played on the opening night here. He’ll play New York’s Carnegie Hall on July 29 and 30, before three festival appearances in September. You can find any remaining tickets here.

The artist offered a taste of the tour last month when he performed an orchestral version of his 2002 track ‘Paper Tiger’ on Jimmy Kimmel.

Beck also recently appeared on the new single ‘Boom Boom Back’ from Spanish rock band Hinds. The collaboration came after Beck met the band by chance at a film screening in LA.

He hasn’t released an album since 2019’s ‘Hyperspace‘, which was a collaborative project with PharrellNME gave the record a four-star review and declared it a “daring new era” for the artist, with Elizabeth Audrey writing: “After a career spanning 30 years, Beck is still shape-shifting and proves, once again, that no genre isn’t malleable for him.”

Meanwhile, the first trailer for A Complete Unknown – a biopic about Dylan starring Timothée Chalamet – was shared this week. The new film, which will arrive in cinemas in January 2025, will see Chalamet take on the role of the iconic musician during his rise to fame.
