Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars

Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars have dropped the country-inspired music video for their new collaborative track ‘Die With A Smile’ – watch it below.

Today (August 16), the pair have released the video for ‘Die With A Smile’. The music video is themed after old-school country performances taped for TV back in the 1970s. Mars plays the guitar, while Gaga is on the piano with a cigarette in her mouth.

However, the song isn’t inspired by country music, and instead takes on the form of a soulful ballad, akin to Mars’ side project with Anderson .Paak, Silk Sonic. It features a soaring chorus and hair-raising builds throughout its runtime.

‘Die With My Smile’ is the first song Gaga has released since appearing on The Rolling Stones track ‘Sweet Sounds Of Heaven‘ last year. Meanwhile, it’s Mars’ first release since dropping Silk Sonic’s debut album ‘An Evening With Silk Sonic’, in 2021.

The song is a one-off collaboration, with Lady Gaga explaining how it came together in a press statement: “Bruno and I have a lot of mutual respect for each other and were talking about collaborating. I was finishing up my own album in Malibu and one night after a long day he asked me to come to his studio to hear something he was working on. It was around midnight when I got there and I was blown away when I heard what he had started making. We stayed up all night and finished writing and recording the song. Bruno’s talent is beyond explanation. His musicianship and vision is next level. There’s no one like him.”

‘Die With A Smile’ comes after Gaga performed during the Paris Olympics opening ceremony last month, taking on Zizi Jeanmaire’s ‘Mon Truc en Plumes’. It was later revealed that her performance was pre-recorded and the 300,000 spectators had watched it on a screen, though it appeared live to viewers at home.

The choreographer and head of dance for the Olympics Maud Le Pladec later explained why it wasn’t performed live, citing the unfortunate weather conditions on the day.

“Unfortunately, it was the only [performance] that, for safety reasons, we had to pre-record late in the afternoon, once we knew for sure that it was going to rain – we had minute-by-minute updates, we had never watched the weather forecast so closely in our lives,” she recalled.

It was also reported that the singer stayed on-site to watch the performance, and she later shared that she “wanted nothing more than to create a performance that would warm the heart of France, celebrate French art and music”.
