Rick Astley

Rick Astley delighted fans at TRSNMT 2024 with a series of covers, including one of Sam Fender‘s ‘Seventeen Going Under’.

During his set on Saturday (July 13), Astley built rapport with the crowd not only by playing a slew of his own hits, but also by telling the 50,000-strong audience in Glasgow Green his personal connection to the city.

“The last time I wore this suit was at my daughter’s wedding and you know where it was?” he asked fans. “Here, in Scotland, because my daughter’s husband is from Glasgow.

“So if they have wee bairns, my possible future grandkids will be at least half Glaswegian.”

He joked with the crowd throughout the performance, assuring them: “‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ comes at the end of the set, don’t worry,” as well as saying there wasn’t “enough insurance in the world” to let him dance onstage.

There were a slew of covers, from Fender’s iconic track to AC/DC’s ‘Highway To Hell’, with his attempt to cover The White Stripes‘ ‘Seven Nation Army’ being met with chants of: “No Scotland, No Party”.

Rick Astley at TRNSMT 2024 played:

‘Never Gonna Stop’
‘Together Forever’
‘Dippin My Feet’ (with Rolling Stones ‘Start Me Up’ outro)
‘She Wants to Dance With Me’
‘Seventeen Going Under’ (Sam Fender cover)
‘Cry for Help’
‘Whenever You Need Somebody’ (O’Chi Brown cover)
‘Good Times’ (Chic cover)
‘Highway to Hell’ (AC/DC cover)
‘Seven Nation Army’ (The White Stripes cover)
‘Never Gonna Give You Up’

Fans of Fender’s track have now reacted to the cover, with one jovially nodding to the lyrics and writing: “never thought I’d [see] the day when I heard Rick Astley sing ‘so I thought about shifting gear'”.

Fans reacted similarly when Astley and Blossoms teamed up to cover The Smiths at Glastonbury 2023 – and the singer more recently put his spin on Olivia Rodrigo‘s ‘Driver’s Licence’ and Ed Sheeran‘s ‘Shape Of You’ during an appearance in the BBC Radio 2 Piano Room.
