Pete Doherty and Carl Barât of The Libertines and Tim Burgess of The Charlatans

The Libertines joined forces with The CharlatansTim Burgess in Brighton for a rendition of ‘Don’t Look Back Into The Sun’. Check it out below.

The moment took place over the weekend, when the British indie icons took to the stage in the coastal city for a headline slot at the On The Beach 2024.

Organised in association with Radio X, the gig was held on July 28 and was part of two weekends of gigs that were held on Brighton Beach. The Kooks performed on the weekend prior (Sunday July 21).

For the slot on Sunday, The Libertines were joined by an array of special guests who performed before them, including The Mary Wallopers and The Charlatans, and the frontman of the latter joined them during the set for a duet on their biggest hit.

The onstage appearance took place during the 21st and final song of the night – which also included tracks from their latest album ‘All Quiet On The Eastern Esplanade’ including ‘Run Run Run’ and ‘Merry Old England’ – when Pete Doherty and co. broke out the fan favourite to close out the set.

The moment marked one of many times that The Libertines and Tim Burgess have come together in past years, as they have a close friendship and worked together countless times.

For instance, Carl Barat and Burgess joined forces 20 years ago to form an English rock supergroup called The Chavs, which was completed by Razorlight drummer Andy Burrows. They made their debut in 2004 and performed a number of live shows, which also saw them cover various Libertines songs.

In 2007, Barat confirmed that he had “married” his girlfriend at the Lost Vagueness field’s Chapel Of Love And Loathing, and did so with Burgess officiating.

Since then, Pete Doherty played a secret, last-minute set at Kendal Calling purely because The Charlatans’ frontman sent him a box of Libertines-branded Yorkshire Tea, and the indie icons appeared as part of Burgess’ listening parties to look back at their debut album in 2020.

‘All Quiet On The Eastern Esplanade’ arrived on March 8 and marked the long-mooted follow-up to 2015’s ‘Anthems For Doomed Youth’. The band first announced details of the project back in October 2023, when they dropped the lead single ‘Run Run Run’.

At the time, Doherty and Barat also spoke to NME about what fans can expect from the new material, saying: “All we want to do is write beautiful songs. That’s what we’ve always wanted to do, but we got distracted – mostly by ourselves… This is the album we’re proud of.”

Reviewing ‘…Eastern Esplanade’, NME gave the album a four-star rating and wrote that “the sense of listening in on a band teetering on the precipice of disaster is gone, replaced by a more stable and necessarily safer version of The Libertines”.

It went on: “The results may be patchy, but this is not, and could not be, an album that rides the same intoxicating high as ‘Up the Bracket’. What they have done, though, is find their voice again, and, for the first time in over 20 years, The Libertines feel like a band with a viable future.”

It was later confirmed that the album had helped them top the UK Albums Charts for the first time in over two decades.
