Weezer have announced the cancellation of their planned ‘SZNZ‘ box set due to them “not expecting enough sales to make it work.”

Following their 2021 LP ‘Van Weezer’, Rivers Cuomo and co released a series of four seasonal EPs, SZNZ: ‘Spring’, ‘Summer’, ‘Autumn’, and ‘Winter’, in 2022. Last year, the band announced that they would be releasing a ‘SZNZ’ box set on X/Twitter to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the EP series. The tweet shared that the box set was “coming soon”, but there has been no update about the status of the set.

Now, Karl Kooch – Weezer’s assistant, webmaster, archivist and “unofficial fifth member” – revealed that the plans for the ‘SZNZ’ box set have been scrapped. On Friday (July 26), Koch took to the Weezerpedia Discord server and shared: “Ok official word: I just learned the SZNZ box was in fact cancelled, I’m sorry to confirm. Apparently high cost vs. not expecting enough sales to make it work. Feels kinda like the Broadway cancel thing… just letting SZNS be ‘as is’, and enjoy,” (per Brooklyn Vegan).

Koch went on to compare the cancellation of the box set to the band’s cancellation of their Broadway residency in 2022. Weezer had announced a five-date series of back-to-back shows at the Broadway Theatre in New York in June. Each concert was set to focus on a different ‘SZNZ’ EP, beginning with ‘Spring’.

However, Cuomo took to Weezer’s official Discord page to confirm that the concerts will no longer go ahead as planned, writing: “I just learned that our Broadway shows have been cancelled (due to low ticket sales and unbelievably high expenses.) I’m very sorry to be telling you this now after we’ve already invested so much time, thought, and emotion,” (via Pitchfork)

Cuomo continued: “Extra apologies to those of you who cleared schedules and made travel plans to be with us. Thanks to @Broadway Producer for all your hard work and great ideas. I loved where we were going and I hope we can find a way to resurrect our vision.”

Elsewhere, Weezer are set to embark on their ‘Voyage To The Blue Planet’ North American tour later this autumn which will celebrate the 30th anniversary of ‘The Blue Album’. They will play the LP in full at the shows and have also promised rarities and “very special guests”. They will be supported by The Flaming Lips and Dinosaur Jr. Find any remaining tickets here.
