House Of The Dragon’s second season served as a steady build to the Targaryen conflict ahead, as Rhaenyra sets her sights on the Iron Throne.
Created by George R.R. Martin and showrunner Ryan Condal, the prequel series is set 200 years before the events in Game Of Thrones and depicts the civil war which erupts within House Targaryen.
In season two, Emma D’Arcy and Matt Smith lead the show’s cast, alongside Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Fabien Frankel, Olivia Cooke, Ewan Mitchell, and Tom Glynn-Carney.
Ahead of the second season, HBO renewed the show for a third season which is set to start production in early 2025.
Books to read after watching House Of The Dragon
Fire & Blood by George R.R. Martin
The obvious choice, but also the most relevant. House Of The Dragon is based on George R.R. Martin’s history book for House Targaryen. This isn’t a complete history though, with a second volume set to be released at some point in the future.
If you want some slightly dense reading material to prepare you for the show’s third season, there’s no better place to turn. You can also find a condensed version titled The Rise Of The Dragon which features new artwork.
Tales Of Dunk And Egg by George R.R. Martin
If you want to prepare for the next Game Of Thrones spin-off before it comes out next year, you can dive into the inspiration behind A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms. It follows the adventures of Dunk, aka Ser Duncan the Tall, and Aegon Targaryen, aka Egg, 90 years before the events of Martin’s A Song Of Ice And Fire novels.
The series consists of three novellas so far, titled The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword, and The Mystery Knight.
The Making Of HBO’s House Of The Dragon by Gina McIntyre
While it doesn’t cover the second season’s creation, this book is filled with art and photography from House Of The Dragon’s debut season. It also features interviews with the show’s cast, including Paddy Considine, and showrunners Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik.
Beyond The Throne by Kristian Nairn
Set to be released in September 2024, this memoir covers actor Kristian Nairn’s rise to fame playing Hodor in Game Of Thrones. Along with insight into his Irish upbringing, the book spills various behind-the-scenes stories, including details of his first audition, in what is a personal journey of the highs and lows around his stardom.
While it doesn’t exactly connect to House Of The Dragon, if you want a different perspective on the Game Of Thrones phenomena, this looks set to be a worthy pick.
