For Those About To Die

The first season of the Roman Empire epic series Those About To Die is streaming on Prime Video now, but when can fans expect to see a second season? Read on for all the info.

The show has been developed and written by Robert Rodat (Saving Private Ryan), based on the 1958 novel by Daniel P. Mannix, with disaster movie veteran Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow) handling some of the directing duties, alongside Marco Kreuzpaintner.

It chronicles the world of the Roman Empire’s theatrical games, including gladiatorial fights and charioteers, exploring the political and social dynamics surrounding those in power.

The cast includes Iwan Rheon (Game Of Thrones), Sara Martins (Death In Paradise) and Tom Hughes (The English), with Anthony Hopkins appearing as the Emperor Vespasian.

In a three-star review of the series, NME wrote: “Does every episode need to come in just shy of an hour? No! Are all of the actors as good as one another? No! Does it all come together in the final episode, making you care more than you thought you did about Kwame and his close friend Viggo (Johannes Haukur Johannesson)? Yes!

“There’s always been obvious drama inherent in the world of the chariot race and the gladiator. You could argue that Those About To Die produces diminishing returns from this obvious drama and that we end up with melodrama. Or you could sit back and laugh as a crocodile bites the head off a man whose tongue was recently cut out. Each to their own.”

When is Those About To Die season two coming out?

All 10 episodes of season one now streaming on Prime Video in the UK, having been released on Peacock in the US.

A second season has not been formally confirmed by any of the key players in the show’s creation, however, Emmerich recently strongly hinted that he expects it to happen.

Speaking to Collider at San Diego Comic-Con, he was asked about where he expects a second season might take the characters, but instead indicated that instead a new run of episodes might in fact take us further into the existing characters’ pasts.

“We have this idea to do a Godfather Two model,” he said, referring to the sequel to the 1972 film classic, which features an exploration of the younger life of Vito Corleone, as well as a continuation of the events from the first film.

“Meaning, Godfather one was this perfect movie, and they said, ‘what should we do?’,” Emmerich continued. “They went into the past so that you show how all this came to be. that he became emperor, and that gets his son in trouble because he’s related to him. They go after him and he survives, and then, on the other hand, tell the story of all these characters–what happens further, and I don’t want to give that away.”

Emmerich also indicated in an interview with the Bingeworthy podcast that he intends to make a “big, big film project” first, before doing “the second season”.

Although nothing has been made certain, Those About To Die fans can apparently be fairly hopeful that there is more to come.
