Some Rihanna fans were left confused after the singer didn’t show up at this year’s edition of the Met Gala.

The singer and business mogul was set to attend the iconic fashion event, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City last night (May 6), however, was nowhere in sight for the red carpet event.
According to People magazine, Rihanna was planning to appear on the night, but dropped out at the last minute due to illness. According to a source speaking with the outlet, the ‘Work’ singer was forced to back out as she had come down with the flu.
Some fans were left disappointed after finding out the news after the event had started.
“Met gala is over ??? No Rihanna? No Blake Lively?” one user wrote on X after the live stream of the red carpet by Vogue ended at 20:30 ET.
“I’m really sad Rihanna isn’t going anymore,” another fan said, while a third shared: “This met gala is factually bad just because Rihanna didn’t attend”.

The singer has previously pulled off some iconic outfits at the event, and had been dropping hints earlier this year about what she had planned for 2024.
The theme for this year’s instalment was “The Garden of Time”, and the Savage x Fenty designer had spoken to Vogue last month about what fans could expect to see from her on the red carpet.
“I’m gonna wear Fenty something! Fenty Beauty, Fenty Skin, Fenty Savage,” she said. The comments also came after she looked back at her more daring options in the past, and said that she is wanting to dress more modestly since becoming a mother.
“I’ve done so much shit in my life. I’ve had my nipples out, my panties out,” she said. “But now, those are the things which, I guess as a mom and an evolved young lady – emphasis on young – there are things I feel like I would never do. Like: ‘Oh my God, I really did that? Nips out?’”
As highlighted by The Independent, Rihanna attended the 2023 edition of the Met Gala with her boyfriend ASAP Rocky, and wore a white Valentino gown in honour of late Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld. She also shared details of her second pregnancy.
The two welcomed Riot Rose, in August last year, and his birth made him the second of their two sons, following the birth of their firstborn, RZA.
Other moments that got fans talking on the red carpet of the Met Gala included Lana Del Rey revealing what her favourite track is from Taylor Swift’s new album, and the ‘Video Games’ singer sparking rumours of a falling out after posing for photos with Kim Kardashian.
In other Rihanna news, the ‘Diamonds’ singer has been sharing numerous updates on new music, including hints that her upcoming album should “be a show of growth” and has “a lot of visual ideas” for the songs she wants to make.
Her last full-length album came in the form of ‘Anti’ – her eighth studio record, which arrived at the beginning of 2016.
